SMCS
Zephyr Fields of Dreams Project
St. Mary
Catholic Schools (SMCS) is pleased to announce plans for the further
development of the high school’s competitive athletic facilities. Among the
exciting improvements planned for the St. Mary Catholic Schools’ main campus are
a new softball field, a practice field and an equipment storage building with
room for team gatherings.
Among the
needs on the athletic/activities facility list, SMCS is placing a priority on
providing adequate and equitable competition facilities. Construction of the
softball field will complete the vision for the campus that was part of the
middle school building project, and will ensure a permanent home for the high
school softball team, which was displaced when the new middle school was
constructed.
The plans also include:
·
A
new practice space for the football and soccer teams who currently practice
where the new softball field will be located;
·
A
canopy over the batting cage that will protect the baseball and softball teams
from inclement weather and the sun; and
·
A
building to house the additional equipment needed to maintain the grounds of the
new school and the baseball and softball diamonds. The building will also be
used for athletic team meetings due to last fall’s expansion of the SMCS STEM Club’s
space.
Re-grading
and surface work for the football and soccer practice fields will begin in
April 2016, with the area ready for use by the beginning of August 2016. Construction
of the softball field will begin in June 2016, with plans to be ready for the
2017 season. Options for the batting cage canopy design and the location,
design and size of the storage/team-gathering space are currently being researched.
Financial
support to complete the field development project comes primarily from generous
gifts from the Jeff and Jennifer Hogenson Family, Scheels
All Sports and Miron Construction, as well as many
other donors and community members. Help is still needed, however, and alumni,
parents and friends of SMCS athletics who appreciate the need for these
improvements are encouraged to make a donation. The SMCS Booster Club will
match, up to a total of $10,000, any donation made to support the Zephyr Fields
of Dreams initiative.
